At today’s meeting of the political council of the Liberal Democratic Party (UzLiDeP), the incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was nominated as the candidate for the presidential election in October. The candidate is due to be approved by the party convention later this month.
In the 2016 elections, Shavkat Mirziyoyev was also nominated by UzLiDeP. He was not present at the current meeting of the party's political council.
According to the press service of UzLiDeP, the meeting participants emphasized that this year's elections are expected to be held under the "renewed national electoral legislation, in accordance with generally recognized international standards, based on democratic principles, openly and publicly."
The members of the political council of UzLiDeP unanimously voted for the nomination of Shavkat Mirziyoyev as a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Uzbekistan – as a person capable of encouraging our people to new achievements, who has devoted his entire life and work to the development of our Uzbekistan, and who enjoys great respect and authority among our fellow countrymen".
The participants also underscored that over the past five years, under the leadership of Shavkat Mirziyoyev, “great many transformations” have begun in the country, “the livelihoods of our people, their mindset have changed,” “the atmosphere of openness has become an integral part of the life of society”.
