On May 19, a resolution in support of Uzbekistan's independence and sovereignty was submitted to the US House of Representatives for reviewing.
The document says that after Uzbekistan gained independence in 1991, diplomatic relations were established between the two countries, and in 2002 the relations had been elevated to the level of strategic cooperation.
It also commended Uzbekistan’s initiatives over the past 5 years to strengthen stability and economic cooperation in the region.
Following the November 2020 bilateral consultations in Columbia County, the two sides agreed to promote security in Afghanistan and the region, and agreements on counterterrorism, bilateral trade and investment, education, health, cybersecurity, and human rights, religious freedom, and freedom of expression in Uzbekistan.
If the Congress adopts this resolution, the United States will recognize the important political, economic and social reforms that have taken place in the country in recent years, emphasizing the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The House of Representatives also recognizes Uzbekistan's election to the UN Human Rights Council in 2021-2023 and calls on the government to use this position to promote human rights and prosecute those who fail to do so.
In addition, the resolution is expected to call on the Uzbek government to deepen economic cooperation with the United States to open up new opportunities in various fields.
