The Ministry of Public Education, in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is developing student textbooks’ scopes and sequences for schools in Uzbekistan. Grade level scopes and sequences are based on standards and are very detailed road maps that lay out exactly what should be covered lesson by lesson in a student textbook and the corresponding teacher guide.

For the first time in Uzbekistan, these detailed scope and sequence documents will allow for the systematic and highly consistent development of student textbooks and teachers guides closely aligned to international standards. Quality teaching and learning materials help students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving and practical skills.

From March 16 to 18, more than 80 education professionals from Uzbekistan and the U.S. participated in the Product Review Orientation Workshop on the Development of Scopes and Sequences hosted by the Ministry of Public Education in partnership with the USAID Uzbekistan Education for Excellence Program. The aim of the workshop was to prepare ministry personnel to participate in the rolling discussions on the quality of the draft scopes and sequences for Uzbek Language Arts and Mathematics (grades 1-4), and Information and Communications Technology (grades 5-11). The English as a Foreign Language scopes and sequences will be developed in 2022.

"We have not had detailed scopes and sequences before as part of the ministry’s curriculum development process, so this focus by the Uzbekistan Education for Excellence Program, in collaboration with the Republican Education Center, will help enhance the internal capacity of Uzbek experts to both develop and review this type of product,” said Shukhrat Sattorov, Director of the Republican Education Center.

The Ministry of Public Education is committed to an ambitious program of systematic and comprehensive reform of the general secondary education system. To support the ministry in achieving its reform agenda, USAID initiated the four-year Uzbekistan Education for Excellence Program in December 2019. The program is implemented by RTI International and its partners, Florida State University and Mississippi State University.
