On January 24, simultaneously in Tashkent city and the Syrdarya province were held the ceremonies to launch of the 1,500 MW capacity Syrdarya thermal power plant project, the Ministry of Energy said. The project will be implemented jointly with ACWA Power of Saudi Arabia.

Electricity purchase agreement and investment agreements for two wind farms in Bukhara and Navoi province were also signed at the event in Tashkent city.

In addition, the Ministry of Energy and ACWA Power signed a framework agreement for the development of hydrogen energy. It "implies Uzbekistan’s first steps in achieving its goal of combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through scientific research in the field of hydrogen and renewable energy," the ministry added.

On January 24, at the same time in Tashkent and the Syrdarya province, a ceremony was held to start construction of the Syrdarya thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,500 MW, the press service of the Ministry of Energy said. The project will be implemented jointly with ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia.

At the event in the capital, agreements on the purchase of electricity and investment agreements were also signed for two wind farms to be built in Bukhara and Navoi provinces with the participation of the same company.

In addition, the Ministry of Energy and ACWA Power signed a framework agreement for the development of hydrogen energy. It "implies the first steps of Uzbekistan in achieving its goal of combating climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through scientific research in the field of hydrogen and renewable energy," the ministry said.

The estimated cost of the Syrdarya TPP project is USD 1.2 billion. The efficiency of the future gas turbine plant in Shirin village will be about 60%. It will use almost two times less gas than the current Syrdarya TPP, built in 1966.

The total capacity of Bash and Dzhankeldy wind farms to be built in the Bukhara province and on the border of Bukhara and Navoi provinces, respectively, will be 1000 MW. The US$ 1.3 billion project is expected to cut carbon emissions by 1.6 million tonnes, helping to meet the government's goal of converting 40% of its energy capacity to renewable energy by 2031.

Agreements to increase the production of clean energy in Uzbekistan by 2,500 MW were signed by the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade and ACWA Power in March 2020.
