It is planned to introduce "mandatory community service" into the system of criminal penalties in Uzbekistan. Such an amendment was considered by the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis on February 24 in the first reading, the Chamber’s press office said.

Introduction of mandatory community service is provided for by the October Presidential decree on reform of the judicial system and strengthening guarantees for the protection of civil rights and freedoms. The innovation is “aimed at strengthening the correctional measures through engaging in socially useful work", the statement said.

In accordance with the above decree starting from April 1, criminal penalties in the form of arrest will be abolished in Uzbekistan, detention of suspected offenders is reduced from 72 to 48 hours, and the deadline for the application of preventive measures in the form of detention and house arrest, and the preliminary investigation is reduced from 1 year to 7 months.
