The Uzbek authorities will regularly provide the public with information on Gulnara Karimova’s assets returned from overseas to the state budget, the Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
Earlier in May it became known that Gulnara Karimova’s US$ 10 million worth of cash was returned from France. The funds, in particular, came from the sale of a luxurious triplex on Marechal Maunoury avenue in Paris, confiscated by a decision of the Paris City Court on June 29, 2019.
“These funds were transferred to the state budget and will be used within a general order,” the Ministry of Justice said.
“It is planned to regularly make public the information on the expenditure of funds returned from France on social projects and on their implementation progress,” the statement said.
The Ministry of Justice emphasized that all negotiations and measures for the return of property are carried out officially in accordance with the legislation of Uzbekistan and international law. Earlier, the Ministry also stated that Gulnara Karimova did not play a role in the return of assets, responding to her letter to the president of Uzbekistan, in which she announced her readiness to abandon claims for US$ 686 million frozen in Switzerland in exchange for ending the criminal prosecution.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor General Office are cooperating with a number of foreign countries, in particular the USA, Switzerland, France, Russia and Latvia, on returning Gulnara Karimova assets totaling over US$ 1.3 billion. In January of this year, the Prosecutor General’s Office also announced that it intends to return 70 pieces of art from Switzerland in criminal cases against Gulnara Karimova.
