The Tashkent city administration has set out changes planned under its 15-Minute Comfortable Environment project, which aims to place kindergartens, schools, family clinics, service facilities and recreation areas within a 15-minute walk of residents.

Parking lots and driveways are to be moved out of inner courtyards, freeing space for children’s play, walking and neighbors’ leisure, the administration said.

The city also plans to build boulevards and shaded paths within mahallas, or neighborhoods, along with sports grounds and meeting places for children and adults. Modern video surveillance systems and prominent SOS buttons for calling for help in emergencies are to be installed on mahalla streets.

“The project’s aim is to make mahallas more comfortable and safe while preserving the traditional bonds between people, mutual respect and readiness to help,” the administration said in its statement.

Under the “15-minute mahalla” principle, 100 mahallas in the capital are to be comprehensively renovated in 2027 and 400 in total by 2030.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Oct. 14 reviewed presentations of projects to improve mahallas, build new schools and kindergartens and develop the urban environment in Tashkent.
