The Senate has approved a bill amending the Latin-Based Uzbek Alphabet Implementation Law, greenlighting a long-discussed overhaul of the national script.
The bill implements structural updates to streamline spelling, modifying the following four characters:
- O‘ o‘ becomes Ö ö
- G‘ g‘ becomes Ğ ğ
- Sh sh becomes Ş ş
- Ch ch becomes Ç ç
Additionally, the letter combination "Ng" will be completely removed from the alphabet as an independent letter, while the apostrophe will be retained.
According to the Senate Press Service, a gradual transition plan has been established to protect public and corporate interests. All official documents, national currency, and financial securities issued under the previous alphabet will remain valid and circulate without restriction. State bodies and public organizations will also be permitted to use their existing symbolic insignia, signage, and street indicators until they naturally degrade or the formal transition timeline concludes.
