Physical abuse of children has been uncovered at the Gamkhurlik (Care) Center for Children with Disabilities in Kurgantepa district of Andijan province, Uzbekistan's National Agency for Social Protection has reported.
According to the agency, an investigation was launched by its Andijan province department after videos showing the abuse began circulating on social media. The inquiry found that six caregivers and one nurse seen in the footage were dismissed from their positions, with their employment contracts terminated in accordance with the law.
Disciplinary measures were also taken against supervisory staff found to have failed to adequately oversee the caregivers' work. Medical specialists from a local health facility were brought in to conduct health examinations of the children at the center.
In addition, extra surveillance cameras have been installed around the children's play areas at the facility.
Uzbekistan operates a dedicated hotline for reporting violence against children: calls to 1246 can be used to report abuse, neglect, or any situation threatening a child's life or health.
