A Migration and Mobility Agreement and a Joint Declaration on the implementation of a pilot migration and mobility program have been signed between the governments of Uzbekistan and Sweden.
According to the Migration Agency, these documents constitute a state-guaranteed legal framework governing the rights of Uzbek citizens to work, study, and reside in Sweden on a lawful basis.
Under the deal:
- cooperation will be established to prepare qualified specialists in the fields of healthcare, engineering, service industries, and caregiving for the Swedish labor market;
- mechanisms will be created to connect Uzbek candidates with Swedish employers;
- academic exchange opportunities will be expanded for students, doctoral candidates, and early-career researchers;
- additional guarantees will be introduced to protect the rights of migrants and their family members;
- visa procedures will be simplified, and a 30-day visa-free regime will be introduced for holders of diplomatic passports;
- joint mechanisms to combat irregular migration, human trafficking, and document forgery will be strengthened.
Additionally, a pilot program will be carried out with the participation of the International Organization for Migration to assess the needs of the Swedish labor market and to launch Swedish language training and vocational preparation programs.
Uzbeks are currently employed through organized migration channels in more than 30 countries. Back in January, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev — during a video conference held with the participation of the Foreign Ministry and heads of diplomatic missions abroad — directed officials to channel citizens toward high-income employment opportunities by deepening cooperation with Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.
