The official opening of Port No. 5 on the Hayratan–Mazar-i-Sharif railway line took place in Afghanistan on May 21, marking the successful completion of construction and restoration work, the press service of Uzbekistan Railways reported.

A railway port, or dry port, serves as a logistics hub for receiving, unloading, temporarily storing, and distributing freight arriving via the rail network.

The ceremony was attended by government officials from both Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. During the event, both sides emphasized that expanding rail connections and launching new logistics hubs will significantly strengthen the region’s transport and communication networks.

To mark the start of full-scale operations at the terminal, the facility welcomed its first freight train, and cargo unloading operations officially got underway.

The sides also reviewed a project to construct an additional 1,650-meter rail spur at Naibabad Station. This expansion aims to boost freight car handling capacity, minimize transit delays, and optimize the overall efficiency of the logistics hub.

The Afghan Deputy Prime Minister directed relevant government agencies to work closely with their Uzbek counterparts to ensure the technical and construction work is completed swiftly.

Furthermore, the Afghan delegation expressed its readiness to ramp up cargo processing volumes and guarantee the seamless, uninterrupted reception of freight trains.

As a reminder, Sogdiana Trans—a subsidiary of Uzbekistan Railways—serves as the official operator managing and maintaining the Hayratan–Mazar-i-Sharif line, overseeing all freight transportation logistics along this key corridor.
