A woman has been arrested in the Sergeli district of Tashkent for attempting to sell her 3-year-old child, the Interior Ministry said. The arrest took place during a sting operation conducted by officers from the Ministry's Operational Search Department alongside the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Department. The woman, 41, was caught red-handed as she attempted to sell her toddler for $10,000.

Reports indicate that the suspect had prearranged the transaction to trade her 3-year-old child for cash with an individual unknown to her. Law enforcement officers intervened and detained her exactly at the moment she was accepting the money.

Following the incident, a criminal case has been launched against the woman under Article 135, Part 3, Clause "b" (Human Trafficking involving a minor) of the Criminal Code, with an investigation currently underway.

This follows a recent case in the Termez district of the Surkhandarya province, where a woman was sentenced to 6 years in prison after trying to sell her four-day-old infant for $1,500. Article 57 of the Criminal Code, which allows for a lighter sentence than the prescribed minimum under mitigating circumstances, was applied in her case.

In a similar incident in the Bukhara district, a mother born in 2008 was detained while trying to sell her newborn daughter, who was not even three days old yet, for $4,000.
