President Shavkat Mirziyoyev chaired a government meeting on progress of major energy projects, ensuring sustainability of the power system, and improving energy efficiency, the presidential press service said.

Reportedly, the country's total power production capacity has reached 25,800 MW. Of this, 8,000 MW, or 31% of the total, is provided by PV, wind, and hydroelectric power plants. In 2026, power production is planned to reach 90 billion kWh—a 40% increase compared to 2020.

Amid economic growth and increased industrial production, power consumption is expected to increase by another 1 billion kWh this year. Priority objectives include ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies to the population and the economy, upgrading grid infrastructure, increasing investment, and the timely commissioning of major facilities.

The oil, gas and energy sector's investment portfolio includes 133 projects worth a total of $51.4 billion. The report also emphasized the need to develop a systematic approach for 73 "strategic" projects worth $43 billion. As of late 2026 the end of the year, 6,770 MW of new capacity is planned to be commissioned, including 2,800 MW of solar power, 2,500 MW of thermal power, 470 MW of wind power, 68 MW of hydropower, and 884 MW of energy storage systems.

In 2026, two major energy projects will be implemented in Samarkand province. The first is the 500 MW wind farm project in Bulungur district, where work has already commenced.

Furthermore, 1,000 MW (two 500 MW phases) PV project has begun with a total capacity in the Sazagan area of the Nurabad district. Work here is also proceeding at an accelerated pace.

In the coming years, six more major projects based on PV and wind energy are planned for the Bukhara province, with a total annual capacity of over 3,000 MW.

The president pointed to the need for close coordination between the Ministry of Energy and the governor and mayor offices in developing energy and energy conservation at the local level. Particular attention is paid to expanding the participation of domestic producers. While the local component in investment projects amounted to $737 million in 2025, the target for 2026 is to exceed $1 billion.

In particular, a transformer production plant was commissioned last year. This year, projects are planned to localize the production of new cables and couplings, wind turbine towers and blades, and to begin a project to localize energy storage systems.

Uzbekistan's energy strategy 2035 includes plans to create a wholesale power market, transfer some grid management to private operators, and introduce RAB tariffs, according to BCG partner Igor Alekseev. Energy consumption will increase to 123 billion kWh, and generation will increase by 34 GW.
