Religious figure and founder of Azon media group, Alisher Tursunov, aka Mubashshir Akhmad, was temporarily transferred to Specialized Hospital for Convicts No. 23 in Tashkent on Friday. His lawyer, Abdulloh Sodiq confirmed this information. The first to report this news was the director of Ezgulik human rights society Abdurakhmon Tashanov.
Alisher Tursunov, sentenced to 2.5 years in prison in October 2025, is now serving his sentence in Penal Colony No. 5 in the Kyzyltepa District of the Navoi province.
Neither his lawyer nor his family have seen him in Tashkent.
Abdulloh Sodiq noted that his client, who suffers from osteoarthritis in his left leg and diabetes, had again experienced swelling in his legs. For this reason, a decision was made to send him to the capital for in-depth examination and treatment, which is expected to last at least two weeks.
In January, Abdullokh Sodiq said that Tursunov had been battling insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes for many years, had been suffering from arthrosis and angina, and could not be held in prison. A letter obtained by the lawyer at the prison confirmed these illnesses and stated that the prisoner had received outpatient treatment three times in November—on November 5-6, 10-14, and 24-30. However, at a meeting with his lawyer on December 26, Tursunov stated that he had only undergone a medical examination and had not received treatment or medication.
The lawyer noted that the prison, aware of Tursunov's health condition, which he described as "critical," was sending him to work 16-hour shifts in the cold at a brick factory.
The Ombudsperson’s local representative then visited Colony No. 5 and reported that Tursunov had no complaints about the medical care provided at the facility, regularly undergoing a full medical checks and receiving the necessary medical care. The report stated that he was working in the cafeteria of his own free will.
