On Tuesday early morning Johann Peter Traugott Tijler, the Head of Mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) arrived in Tashkent to observe the presidential elections.
On October 28, the Central Election Commission accredited the members of the main group of the ODIHR mission, comprising 17 people from 13 OSCE member-states. Besides, the mission will include the long-term observers - 28 people and short-term observers - 250 people.
This is the first time ODIHR has sent a full observation mission to Uzbekistan, thus highlighting the country's readiness to hold an important political event in an open and transparent way in line with international electoral standards."This is the first time I have been in your country as the head of the elections observation mission and I am delighted by the reception",- said Johan Peter Traugott Thaler upon arrival.
The tasks of the mission head is to oversee the overall work of the mission, establishment and maintenance of contacts with government bodies, electoral authorities and other stakeholders in the electoral process, as well as providing of intermediate, preliminary and final reports.
Johan Peter Traugott Tijler is a Swedish national, who has 40 years experience as a diplomat. In 2012-2016 he was the Ambassador of Sweden to Iran, the former head of the diplomatic mission in Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Africa and other countries.
