Last week Berlin hosted the Uzbek-German intergovernmental meeting on financial and technical cooperation. The Uzbekistan delegation was headed by the chairman of the Committee for Investments, Azim Ahmedkhodjaev. A Protocol was signed following the meeting, Jahon reported.

A Memorandum of Understanding was reportedly signed between the Center for Secondary Vocational Education (CSVE) under the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of Uzbekistan and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) for implementation of the Vocational Education in Central Asia regional program.

At the meeting of the Intergovernmental Working Group on Trade and Investment, the sides discussed the state and prospects for cooperation in these areas.

On the same day, an Uzbekistan-Germany business forum took place in the building of Deutsche Bank including representatives of more than a hundred German companies. The event was organized by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Germany together with the bank and the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations.

Some participants of these events expressed their opinion on the prospects for cooperation.

The Regional Director of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, Gisela Hammerschmidt said:

- We the talks with Uzbek partners were successful and I want to emphasize that they took place in a relaxed and collegial atmosphere. The sides came up with new ideas  for advancing the bilateral ties, given the Uzbekistan’s Development Strategy and the State Program "Year of Dialogue with the People and Human Interests". In general, we are satisfied with the outcomes and confident in the effectiveness of the large-scale reforms being undertaken in Uzbekistan.

Head of Health division at KfW Development Bank Marlis Sieburger:

- I coordinate projects in the field of health. Our current project provides for the reorganization of provincial multi-disciplinary and family polyclinics in Uzbekistan. We are also pleased to assist in the implementation of environmental management and energy efficient technologies in Uzbekistan’s healthcare system.

Regional Director of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) in Uzbekistan Torsten Brezina said:

- I am satisfied with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the CSVE on the implementation of a joint project in the field of vocational training, which involves the preparation of qualified teachers for rural schools.

Managing Director for Central and Eastern Europe of Deutsche Bank AG Jörg Bongartz:

- During the business forum we obtained a lot of useful information. Personally, I was greatly interested in the reforms in the field of currency regulation. I think that Uzbekistan still has a lot to do, but the steps taken are very convincing. Today German businesses can feel “the wind  of changes” and new opportunities opening up in Uzbekistan.
