Uzbekistan Railways has laid 29.6 km of the railway line between Urgench and Khiva, the company said. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in January 2017 set out the task to boost the tourist potential of Khorezm province, pointing to the need to build Urgench to Khiva railway line and a modern rail station in Khiva city thus enabling electric trains movement, and in the future the movement of the Afrosiyob high-speed train.
The project designed by BoshTransLoyiha (transl. Main Transport Project) institute has an estimated cost of US$35.9 million and is expected to be completed this year.
