Uzbekistan's shadow economy generated 245.5 trillion soums (roughly $20.6 billion) in gross value added during January-June 2026, the State Statistics Committee said in a report.

The committee said the non-observed economy accounted for 22.9% of gross domestic product over the period.

The shadow economy breaks down as follows:

  • Household and sole entrepreneurial activity: 165.5 trillion soums (about $13.9 billion), or 15.4% of GDP
  • /informal economy: 80 trillion soums (about $6.7 billion), or 7.5% of GDP

By sector, agriculture, forestry and fisheries accounted for 60.5% of combined household and informal economic activity, followed by services at 23%, construction at 17.8%, and industry at 6.7%.

The figures follow an earlier report that Uzbekistan's shadow economy generated 102.7 trillion soums (about $8.6 billion) in the first quarter of 2026 alone.

During that earlier reporting period, the shadow economy's share to GDP stood also at 22.9%, driven by the same combination of household/individual activity and informal economic operations.
