Uzbekistan has successfully launched its first test weather balloon, the national weather service, Uzhydromet, announced on Thursday.
The aerological balloon was deployed in Bukhara province, marking a major milestone in advancing the country's hydrometeorological sector, improving upper-atmosphere research, and boosting the accuracy of weather forecasts.
Equipped with a modern radiosonde device, the balloon recorded critical real-time meteorological data at various altitudes during its flight. The device transmitted key metrics—including air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction—directly to a ground receiving station.
The captured atmospheric data will play a vital role in enhancing synoptic analysis, refining weather predictions, and providing early warnings for severe weather events. Additionally, this data will supply reliable meteorological intelligence to key sectors like aviation and agriculture.
This launch aligns with broader national efforts to modernize climate technology. Under a presidential decree signed on March 25, Uzbekistan is also set to phase in artificial rain generation and automated wind systems. The initial phase of this initiative will focus on improving air quality in the capital. Necessary equipment will be installed in low-humidity areas across Tashkent city and the surrounding Tashkent province by October 1, 2027.
