President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended a high-profile farewell ceremony on Friday for the Uzbekistan national football team as they prepare to head to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the presidential press service said.

In his address, the head of state congratulated his fellow countrymen and the members of the national squad, declaring the occasion "yet another historic day for Uzbek football." He expressed immense hope, thanking the players, parents, and coaches, while separately praising the fans and fan clubs for acting as a vital "twelfth player" through both victories and hardships. The President noted that "football in our country has truly become a close friend to every household," voicing confidence that the team’s path would inspire a new generation of youth.

Addressing the squad directly, the head of state emphasized that the entire nation is sending them off with its highest hopes, urging them to step onto the pitch with absolute confidence, courage, and resilience. Following the national anthem, President Mirziyoyev walked onto the pitch to take a group photo, shaking hands with each athlete before the event concluded with a pop concert and a friendly match.

However, while intended to inspire, such high-stakes official send-offs have historically done a disservice to Uzbek sports. Rather than acting as a source of motivation, these grand political meetings frequently subject athletes to overwhelming psychological pressure. On numerous occasions, Uzbek national teams across various age levels and sports have cracked under the crushing weight of public and administrative expectations right before major international tournaments.

Time and again, instead of fostering confidence, these rigid ceremonies have transformed natural athletic motivation into a fear of failure, leading to underwhelming and strained performances on the field. As the "White Wolves" prepare for their monumental World Cup campaign, the critical question remains whether they can break this historical cycle or if the suffocating anxiety of "national duty" will once again compromise their performance on the global stage.
