Uzbekistan has launched the construction of several major energy initiatives in partnership with UAE-based AMEA Power, the Ministry of Energy said.

The projects officially broke ground on May 13 as part of the flagship Uzbekistan Energy Week 2026. Among the developments, construction began on a 150 MW/300 MWh energy storage system in the Mirzo-Ulugbek district of Tashkent. The total investment for this facility is estimated at $86.1 million.

Additionally, a second energy storage installation - commanding a capacity of 200 MW/800 MWh - will be built alongside AMEA Power in the Gijduvan district of the Bukhara province. The financial blueprint for this project sits at $200 million.

The collaboration also extends to Kungrad district of Karakalpakstan, where work is underway on a massive 1,000 MW wind power plant coupled with a 40-kilometer transmission line. The project represents a capital injection valued at $1.06 billion.

The Ministry of Energy emphasized that these initiatives are set to strengthen the nation's energy infrastructure, accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources, and significantly bolster grid stability.

Uzbekistan's overarching energy strategy through 2035 outlines the creation of a wholesale electricity market, the transition of select distribution networks to private operators, and the implementation of Regulatory Asset Base (RAB) tariffs, according to insights shared by BCG Partner Igor Alekseev in October 2025. Over this period, national power consumption is projected to climb to 123 billion kWh, supported by an additional 34 GW of generation capacity.

Speaking at an Asian Development Bank meeting in Samarkand, Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev revealed the country's export volumes, highlighting a profound transformation: Uzbekistan, which was an electricity importer just a few years ago, now supplies power to Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan. Khodjaev stated that the nation is successfully positioning itself as a "reliable producer," an essential transit corridor, and a regional integrator for Central Asian power systems.
