Romania and Uzbekistan celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations on October 6, 2025. On this occasion, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania, H.E. Mr. Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, delivered a lecture at the Tashkent Note University of Economics. On behalf of the Romanian Embassy in Tashkent, he warmly congratulated the people of Uzbekistan on this remarkable occasion.
In his speech, the Ambassador underscored the dynamic development of Romanian-Uzbek cooperation over the past three decades. He emphasized that Romania highly values the relations of mutual respect and friendship with the Republic of Uzbekistan. Daniel Cristian Ciobanu emphasized the growing interest of both sides in expanding and deepening practical cooperation. Strengthening cooperation with Uzbekistan in the political, diplomatic, trade, economic, cultural, and educational fields is among Romania's priority interests in Central Asia. He welcomed the large-scale reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan, emphasizing that this process will open up new opportunities for expanding Romanian-Uzbek cooperation. He wished Uzbekistan continued success in continuing this important path.
The ambassador noted that Romanian business interest in Uzbekistan is growing, and bilateral trade is expanding. According to the National Statistical Committee of Uzbekistan, the bilateral trade grew by over 3165 between 2020 and 2024. According to the National Institute of Statistics of Romania, Romania's exports to Uzbekistan in 2024 surpassed those of geographically closer countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkmenistan. A similar situation was recorded in 2022.
The ambassador also assured that Romania would firmly support the development of Uzbekistan's relations with the European Union. A new Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and Uzbekistan is scheduled to be signed this month.
Daniel Cristian Ciobanu emphasized the importance of a creative approach in diplomacy. The Ambassador recalled with pleasure that in 2021, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the independence of Uzbekistan, he climbed the Mount Chimgan (3,309 meters) and recorded a short video footage with congratulations. In 2022, on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, he climbed Mount Hazrati Sultan (4,083 meters) in the Kashkadarya province and again recorded a short video in Uzbek language with congratulations. In 2023, on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ambassador climbed the Pulatkhan plateau (2,823 meters). In 2023, Daniel Cristian Ciobanu also completed a 60-minute hot air balloon flight (Samsarak-Parkent route) at 900-meter altitude to celebrate the 161st anniversary of Romanian diplomacy. In conclusion of his speech, the Ambassador expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Rector of the Tashkent Note University of Economics, Tulkin Teshabaev, for his warm hospitality and assistance in organizing this event on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and Uzbekistan.
