Man was sentenced to three years in prison for liking a prohibited post six years ago in Surkhandarya province, the provincial courts' spokesman said on his Telegram channel.

In 2019, the defendant U. A. liked a lecture by Abdugani Umarov (aka Abdulloh Domla) on Odnoklassniki.ru social network, which was deemed to contain extremist ideas, and was deemed to have distributed it to his friends online.

Reportedly, the man committed a crime under Production, storage, distribution, or display of materials containing a threat to public safety using the media or telecommunications networks, as well as the internet charge.

By a verdict issued by the Kumkurgan district criminal court on July 1, U.A. was found guilty under this article and, under Article 57 of the Criminal Code (which imposes a more lenient sentence), was sentenced to three years' imprisonment in a general colony.

The list of materials containing extremist and terrorist ideas was published has been updated earlier. The materials included in this list are prohibited from import, production, distribution, and display in Uzbekistan.

According to Article 11 of the Combating Extremism Law of July 30, 2018, the import, production, storage, distribution, and display of extremist materials, paraphernalia, and symbols of extremist organizations, as well as their distribution and display in the media or telecommunications networks, including the internet, are illegal in Uzbekistan.
