Surgeon mistakenly amputated a patient's healthy leg in Ferghana province. A few days later, she died. The man also held the position of chief of the surgical department of the Fergana branch of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Endocrinology.

The patient was admitted to the clinic on October 18, 2024, and was diagnosed with "severe type II diabetes mellitus, decompensation stage, neuroischemic form of diabetes mellitus, condition after amputation of the left leg, comminuted fracture of the knee joint."

The operation was performed the next day by the head of the department with the participation of randomly selected medical workers and a student without special qualifications.

During the operation, instead of the diseased left leg, the doctor amputated the healthy right leg at the hip. Later, reportedly the left leg was also amputated - this time blindly, without an accurate diagnosis.

The woman died on November 7 due to the loss of a healthy limb and the severity of two surgical interventions.

At a hearing on May 6 of this year, the Kuva District Criminal Court found the man guilty under Improper performance of professional duties charge of the Criminal Code.

He was sentenced to four years of imprisonment with a three-year ban on holding managerial and medical positions in the Ministry of Health system. The victim's legal representative was ordered to pay 27.806 million sums in material damages and 80 million sums in moral damages. After that, the doctor filed an appeal. He claimed that his actions did not constitute a crime and that the patient's death was not related to his actions. The victim's legal representative demanded that the amount of damages be increased to 28 million 995 thousand sums in material damages and 350 million sums in moral damages. The appellate court upheld the original sentence and dismissed both appeals.
