On June 14, the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved amendments to the Citizenship of the Republic of Uzbekistan Law. Amendments to the law provide for the recognition of:
- stateless persons registered at their place of permanent residence in Uzbekistan before January 1, 2005 (earlier - before January 1, 1995) and who were not previously citizens of a foreign state;
- stateless persons who have permanently resided in Uzbekistan for at least 15 years and were not citizens of a foreign state during this period;
- children, one of whose parents is recognized as a citizen of Uzbekistan, who have not adopted the citizenship of a foreign state and live in Uzbekistan.

In the absence of documents confirming the facts for the recognition of citizenship of Uzbekistan, the applicant can establish these facts through the court.
A person who has obtained the citizenship of Uzbekistan shall get:
- an identification card of a citizen of Uzbekistan or another document confirming the existence of citizenship of Uzbekistan issued by the police;
- a biometric passport of a citizen of Uzbekistan for traveling abroad or another document confirming the existence of citizenship of Uzbekistan issued by consular office.
The Law comes shall take immediate effect from the date of official publication on June 15
The President announced the facilitation of obtaining Uzbek citizenship in his address to the parliament in December 2020. The head of state noted that thanks to the simplification, another 20 thousand people will get the opportunity to become citizens of Uzbekistan.
