The renowned journalist, the editor-in-chief of Uzbekiston Ovozi and Voice of Uzbekistan newspapers, Safar Ostonov died at the age of 72, the Journalists' Union said.

The Union noted that the death occurred on June 8. Reportedly, he was recently undergoing treatment. According to some media reports, ​he contracted coronavirus in April-May.

Safar Ostonov 72, graduated from the Tashkent State University in 1972, majoring in journalism.

He began his career in 1971 as a proofreader for a republican youth newspaper. In 1990-1996 he worked as the chief editor of the Sport and Football newspapers, in 1996-2002 - lead consultant, consultant in the Office of the President of Uzbekistan.

Since 2002, he served as the editor-in-chief at Uzbekiston Ovozi and Voice of Uzbekistan newspapers.

In 1999 he was awarded the title of Honored Journalist of Uzbekistan. He was a member of the Writers' Union.

In 2019, he was elected a deputy of the Legislative Chamber from the National Democratic Party.
