90 km of steel trunk at Karshi to Dehkanabad railway route were electrified on the New Year's Eve. The works were launched in September 2016, a statement of Uzbekistan Railways said.
This is one of the phases of the Karshi to Termez 325 km route electrification project. Upon completion it will be possible to replace the diesel locomotives for electric ones, reduce the costs by more than a third, increase speed and capacity of the railway and reduce the carbon footprint.
The main components used in electrification are manufactured as part of the localization program at Uzbek enterprises. EnergoMontazhny №1, an Uzbekistan Railways company erected 2000 reinforced concrete columns, 1800 consoles and other structures, assembled 224 km of overhead network.
Electrical works at the Karshi to Termez railway route will be fully completed in 2017.
