President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Dec 26 signed a law "On social services for the elderly, disabled and other socially vulnerable categories of people." The document, adopted by the Legislative Chamber on 6 October and approved by the Senate on October 12, comes into force on 27 December.

The Law defines the term "social services" as "a set of legal, economic, psychological, educational, medical, rehabilitation and other measures provided to a person in need, which aimed at improving the quality of life, creating equal opportunities in a society and (or) building capacity to provide one’s own basic needs."

The law defines the respect for human rights, humanity, availability, preventive orientation, targeted and personalized approach and voluntarity as the basic principles of social services.

Social services are provided in the form of social support and counseling,  home care, service in day care and (or) a short stay and residential care facilities.
