262 persons were acquitted by Uzbek criminal courts in 2017, while in 2012-2016 only 7 people were acquitted. Aziz Abidov, the official representative of the Supreme Court said.
In three months of 2018, the criminal courts acquitted and rehabilitated 114 defendants and convicts in 68 criminal cases.
In particular, the courts of first instance issued acquittals against 55 persons and, in accordance with article 83 (grounds for rehabilitation) of the Criminal Procedure Code, criminal cases against 9 persons were terminated, the courts of higher instance acquitted and rehabilitated 50 persons with criminal cases terminated.
The Presidium of the Supreme Court acquitted and rehabilitated 2 persons, the Judicial Collegium for Criminal Cases - 9 persons.
29 people in criminal cases were acquitted and rehabilitated by courts in the first, appellate and cassation instances in Kashkadarya province, 16 - in Tashkent city, 13 - in Tashkent province, 7 - in Surkhandarya, 7 - in Andijan, 6 in Khorezm provinces, 5 - in Karakalpakstan, Samarkand province - 5, Fergana province - 4, Jjizakh province - 4, Syrdarya province - 4, Navoi province - 2 and Bukhara province - 1.
"The Supreme Court, based on the results of examining of judicial decisions, found that all decisions were justified, and since the charges brought in criminal cases were not confirmed by conclusive evidence, were based on assumptions, inaccurate information, as well as on unacceptable evidence," - said Aziz Abidov.
