The Environmental Police have launched a probe into a spill involving an oil-based fluid that leaked into a river in Boysun district of Surkhandarya.
According to the Committee for Ecology, the events unfolded as follows:
- an oil-based fluid began bubbling up from a well operated by the "Surkhan Gas Chemical Operating Company" joint venture (the Ministry of Energy notes this initially occurred in late December 2025).
- to prevent the fluid from reaching natural water bodies, the joint venture utilized specialized machinery from "Eriell Oilfield Services Middle East DMCC" to dig and secure 11 containment trenches.
- however, the Environmental Police determined that following heavy rainfall in Boysun on April 23, approximately 1.2 tons of the oil-based liquid overflowed and washed into the Khongaransoy River.
The environmental damages resulting from the incident have been assessed at over 8.5 billion soums.
“The spill has been contained, and the water has since been cleared of the oil mixture. The investigation is ongoing, and once finalized, all gathered documentation will be handed over to law enforcement agencies for a formal legal evaluation,” the Ecology Committee concluded.
