The document on Uzbekistan's accession to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage was handed over to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna Sunday. During the meeting, the parties underscored that Tashkent had been swiftly taking on international obligations on nuclear safety.
According to Dunyo, the ceremony took place at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna. Rafael Grossi, Director General of the Agency, said that the issues of the country's accession to a number of nuclear conventions had been discussed during his meeting with the President Mirziyoyev in Tashkent in 2024.
He underscored that Uzbekistan had joined four key international documents in the nuclear field in a short period of time: Nuclear Safety, Assistance in the Event of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency, Early Notification of a Nuclear Disaster and the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage. According to Grossi, these decisions were made with the personal attention and support of the head of state.
Uzbekistan’s Accession of to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Law (Vienna, May 21, 1963) was adopted on September 26, 2025. Within the framework of the relevant regulatory and legal framework, Uzbekistan is promoting initiatives for the development of nuclear energy, including nuclear power plants and small modular reactors.
At the end of the meeting, Rafael Grossi expressed gratitude for the active and fruitful cooperation with Uzbekistan. The procedures for the entry into force of official documents will be aligned with the requirements of the convention.
