The Senate passed the Improving the effectiveness of morale building work with convicts serving sentences in penitentiary institutions bill Thursday.
The bill has proposed amendments to the Criminal, Criminal Procedure and Criminal Executive Codes. The Criminal Code will be supplemented with Article 74-1, which provides for reducing the sentence term due to the fact that a person has embarked on the path of correction.
It also stipulates that if a convict reads books from the list of literature approved by the Republican Center for Spirituality and Enlightenment, aimed at forming correct spiritual and moral values in convicts, and the fact of reading these books is confirmed, based on the conclusion of the Commission for each book read, the term of serving a sentence can be reduced by three days, but not more than 30 days per year.
The above provision shall apply only to persons who are entitled for release on parole, with the exception of those sentenced to life imprisonment. If adopted, the proposed amendments will apply to more than 13.5 thousand convicts.
