In H1 of 2025, Uzbekistan courts held over 5,000 people accountable for domestic violence, said Aziz Abidov, the spokesman to the Supreme Court.
A total of 4,952 people were prosecuted under Domestic violence charge, with 3,200 fined and 1,752 arrested.
A total of 231 people were convicted of repeated or aggravated domestic violence under the Article 126-1 of the Criminal Code, of which 65 were sentenced to imprisonment and 166 to other types of punishment.
Under the Article 41-1 of the Administrative Offences Code (Sexual Harassment), 986 people were held accountable, 358 of whom were fined and 628 were placed under administrative arrest.
For disclosing information that infringes on the honor and dignity of an individual and reflects the intimate aspects of a person's life, 99 people were convicted under Article 141-3 of the Criminal Code. Of these, 24 were sentenced to imprisonment, 75 to other penalties not related to imprisonment.
In April 2023, the President Mirziyoyev signed amendments to the legislation on the protection of the rights and freedoms of women and children. Since they took effect, over 9,100 people have been convicted of domestic violence in nine months, and 15,826 people have been sentenced in the first 10 months of 2024. In 2023, 666 people were found guilty of sexual harassment and 48 people were convicted of disseminating intimate information.
The attorneys Zayniddin Shamsidinov and Utkirbek Kholmirzaev from the Tashkent State Law University previously studied judicial practice in cases of domestic violence and found out that sometimes investigators and courts use articles on domestic violence to punish victims, as well as to force them to reconcile.
