Reports surfaced on social media that individuals may be engaged in taxi driver job in their own province only, meaning taht in Tashkent city, only cars with license plate starting with “01” (Tashkent city local plate) shall be only issued taxi permits.
The Ministry of Transport confirmed the reports. The spokesman to the ministry, Navruz Ashurmatov said that the process was now taking shape.
Ashurmatov added that in this case, drivers may work only in the territory specified in the license place and the adjacent provinces.
"For example, a vehicle with a license plate number starting with the code 01 registered in Tashkent city may be engaged in taxi driving in Tashkent city, Tashkent and Syrdarya provinces only. The same applies to taxi drivers of other provinces," he concluded.
The opposition People's Democratic Party believes that the ban on provincial residents driving taxis in Tashkent city conflicts with the Article 67 of the Constitution. This article guarantees the unity of the economic space, the free movement of goods, services, labor resources and financial resources on the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Earlier, the finance blogger Otabek Bakirov called on MPs to seize the Constitutional Court against the government's decision.
