The Chinese marketplace Temu has been registered as a legal entity — a resident of Uzbekistan, the Tax Committee said today.
“The Temu marketplace has been registered in Uzbekistan as a taxpayer. However, there are still issues that are being discussed with the marketplace regarding previous periods. Negotiations are currently underway. Upon completion of the process, a final conclusion on its activities will be announced,” the report says.
The platform was registered on March 14, but “negotiations on taxes for previous years are ongoing.”
“The company needs to register with the tax authorities as a value-added tax payer at the VAT office. As an electronic trading platform, it can provide reports for previous years since the start of operations in Uzbekistan,” the committee noted.
As an example, the Tax Committee cited the Russian marketplace Wildberries, which underwent a tax audit. According to the audit findings, the company paid an additional 51.2 billion soums to the budget of Uzbekistan for 2022-2024, of which 42.8 billion soums were in the form of VAT.
“Facebook, Amazon and other companies are not residents of Uzbekistan, they are foreign enterprises, voluntarily submit reports and pay only VAT. Temu is registered as a legal entity - a resident. Now the company will officially operate in the country and pay taxes. Negotiations are underway so that they register as non-residents, provide tax reports and pay VAT for past years,” the committee added.
That is, Temu begins official work in Uzbekistan on March 14, but it also needs to register as a VAT payer in the list of the Tax Committee of foreign companies and pay VAT for past years. Currently, this list includes 62 companies, including Facebook, Amazon, Google, Spotify and others. Temu and the Tax Committee are discussing the period for which the tax must be paid.
