The government commissions of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have fully completed the delineation of the remaining sections of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border, the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan said in a statement.
The agreements were reached on Wednesday at a meeting in Batken between the heads of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan Kamchybek Tashiev and the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan Saimumin Yatimov, who head the commissions.
Tashiev and Yatimov instructed the working groups to begin the process of drawing up the final documents for the delimitation of the state border.
“I can say with full responsibility that today is a historic moment, when the agreement on the border has been reached. In the future, there remains the legal registration, ratification through parliaments and the signatures of our presidents. I think that in the near future, literally in a few months, we will finally complete [the issue] of our border,” said the head of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan.
The total length of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border is 972 km. Armed conflicts have periodically occurred there due to dozens of disputed sections. The last major escalation occurred in September 2022. Dozens of people were injured and killed on both sides.
