Traffic accident occurred in Muzrabat district of Surkhandarya province, which led to the death of a child, the press service of the provincial traffic police reported.

On May 17, in the Darband mahalla, M.B., 24, on his GM Cobalt sedan exceeded the speed limit and ran a red traffic light. At that time, three children were crossing the road, the driver hit two of them. Social networks report that the driver left the scene of the accident.

As a result, 12-year-old R.M. died from his injuries in the intensive care unit of the district medical association. The health of the other two children is assessed as satisfactory and they were sent home, the report said.

The Muzrabat district police department has launched a criminal case and an investigation is underway.

In 2023, 9,839 road accidents (-0.6%) occurred in Uzbekistan, in which 9,209 citizens were injured and 2,282 (-3.1%) were killed. In 1,794 accidents, 1,568 children were injured and 263 children died. The Traffic Safety police head department set the goal of reducing the number of road accidents and fatalities by 15% over the past year, but did not manage it.
