Footage surfaced on social networks showing a bear running in a neighbourhood in Surkhandarya province and people running away from it.
The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change published a statement according to which the bear entered the Jannatmakon neighbourhood in Sariosiyo district of Surkhandarya today.
The animal entered the territory of residential buildings, putting people's lives at risk, the statement said.
“the animal attacked and injured one of the police officers, when they tried to neutralize the bear. The bear also entered the territory of a local school , where students were at that moment. The bear was aggressive and threatened the lives of schoolchildren, which is why prompt action was required, and the predator was shot dead,” the ministry said.
The police officer who was attacked is currently undergoing a medical examination.
