The president Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed the Pardoning a group of persons serving a sentence who sincerely repented of their deeds and firmly embarked on the path of correction Decree ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, with various pardon measures applied in relation 426 citizens.

Of those pardoned, 135 persons were unconditionally released, 200 persons were released on parole, the sentences of 26 persons were replaced by milder ones. While, the sentences of 65 persons were cut.

Among those people 50 are female, 11 foreign nationals, 13 men aged over 60, and 5 persons who had joined the banned organizations.

The pardon tradition on the ocassion of various public holidays dates back to the Soviet times. However, pardoning leads to the corruption within the penitary system, with many convicts trying to evade imprisonment by bribing officials in return of being included in pardon lists. This in turn results in well-off people not getting intimidated from commiting crimes due to the existence of pardon-lifeline.
