Uzbekistan plans to launch a national payment switch system in 2027 to process all domestic currency payments, Jamshid Usmonov, chief of the Payment Systems Development Department at the Central Bank said.
According to the official, the project is being rolled out in accordance with a timeline approved by a presidential decree. Regulatory and legal frameworks required for the system's deployment are currently being drafted, while technical implementation is slated for the upcoming stages.
The Central Bank representative explained that the national payment switch will serve as a unified infrastructure for domestic operations. Currently, certain transactions made via international bank cards are processed through processing centers located abroad. The new system will enable all such operations to be handled entirely within Uzbekistan.
"The national switch will reduce our dependency on foreign companies and ensure that payment data is processed domestically," Jamshid Usmonov noted.
He further emphasized that the new system will significantly strengthen the resilience of the country's payment infrastructure and enhance data protection standards.
This development follows the launch of the Unified UzQR system in July 2026. The Central Bank recently clarified that the uniform 0.65% transaction fee under this system is levied from commercial and service enterprises, rather than retail buyers.
The Unified UzQR operates as a centralized system allowing users to make payments using a single QR code through any bank or payment application. Its primary objectives are to expand integration among various banking and payment services while accelerating the growth of cashless settlements across the country.
