The Supreme Court has denied reports that it held a meeting for court chairpersons on August 15, following the death of Aziza Mirzayeva, chairperson of the Tomdi District Court, in a car accident.
The crash occurred around midday on Saturday on the Zarafshan-Tomdi road. According to preliminary information, Mirzayeva lost control of her vehicle, which ran off the road and overturned. She sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.
Human rights activist Abdurakhmon Tashanov had earlier claimed that the Supreme Court leadership was holding a meeting for the entire judicial system that day. According to Tashanov, chairpersons of city and district courts had been directed to take part via video conference from their offices.

"No meetings were scheduled or held by the Supreme Court on Saturday, August 15. Nor were any instructions issued requiring judges to report to their workplaces on a day off," the court said in a statement.
The court also urged the public not to draw premature conclusions about the cause of the accident or the purpose of Mirzayeva's trip.
"The circumstances of the accident will be legally assessed by the authorized bodies in accordance with the procedure established by law. Until the investigation is complete, it would be inappropriate to present as confirmed fact any assumptions about where the deceased was traveling, for what purpose, or what caused the accident," the Supreme Court said.
