Today, the Senate Committee on International Relations, Foreign Economic Relations, Foreign Investments and Tourism convened for a preliminary discussion of the Bill on the Accession of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (Vienna, May 21, 1963), the press service of the Senate said.
The discussion was attended by senators, members of the standing commissions of local Councils of People's Deputies, representatives of the Atomic Energy Agency, specialists and experts from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences and the Directorate for the Construction of Nuclear Power Plants.
Reportedly, as a result of Uzbekistan's accession to this Convention, the main provisions that determine the liability for damage caused as a result of incidents at civilian nuclear facilities will also be implemented. The nuclear liability regime will also ensure compensation to the people of Uzbekistan in the event of a nuclear accident.
They emphasized that the main purpose of this document was to identify the operator's liability for nuclear damage resulting from incidents at facilities operated by the operator of a nuclear facility, as well as minimum requirements for ensuring financial protection from nuclear damage.
The senators noted that Uzbekistan's accession to the Vienna Convention would serve to ensure its entry into the international legal arena in the field of nuclear energy and safety. In addition, it envisages to ensure nuclear safety, adequately protect the rights of victims of nuclear damage, and introduce an insurance system and compensation mechanisms in the field of nuclear energy.
Also, Uzbekistan's accession to the Vienna Convention will further expand cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and accelerate the implementation of promising projects within the framework of its programs.
At the end of the meeting, the Committee passed the relevant resolution.
