President Shavkat Mirziyoyev congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian on being elected as the president of Iran, his spokesman Sherzod Asadov said.
The head of state in his message expressed confidence that “the multifaceted and long-term partnership between our countries will be brought to a higher level in all priority areas.”
“We look forward to further consistent and effective expansion of cooperation in the political, trade-economic, transport-communications and cultural-humanitarian areas with Iran state, which has been developing dynamically in recent years,” the message says.
Masoud Pezeshkian, described by some observers as a reformist, won the second round of Iran's presidential election with 53.3% of ballots. His opponent, the conservative Said Jalili, received 44.3%. A second round of elections had to be held after no candidate received a majority of votes in the first round on June 28.
The elections were called after Iran's previous leader, Ibrahim Raisi, died in a helicopter crash in May.
Masoud Pezeshkian, a former heart surgeon, criticized the Iranian morality police during the election campaign, the BBC said in a story. He promised to end the “isolation” of Iran from the rest of the world. Pezeshkian also called for "constructive negotiations" with the West over reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, under which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for easing Western sanctions.
