Australian Open defending champion Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat to world number 117 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in just the second round in Melborune.

It is Djokovic's earliest exit from a Grand Slam since he was beaten in straight sets by Marat Safin in the second round at Wimbledon in 2008.

In 13 appearances at the Australian Open, Djokovic had won the title six times and never lost to anyone ranked lower than No. 68 in the world.

So his 7-6, 5-7, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 defeat in four hours and 48 minutes in the Rod Laver Arena at the hands of No. 117 Denis Istomin was a true bolt from the blue.

Wildcard Istomin is only the second player ranked outside the top 100 to beat Djokovic in seven years and has just one tour title to his name since turning professional in 2004.
