The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supported Uzbekistan’s initiative to hold an international conference on food security in 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu spoke about the prospects for bilateral cooperation on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The initiative to hold a conference on food security was put forward by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Samarkand.

Vladimir Norov said at the meeting that Uzbekistan considered FAO as an important global multilateral platform for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Currently, the FAO portfolio in the country has reached 59 projects for a total of $65 million.

The parties also noted the importance of implementing a framework program between Uzbekistan and FAO to support the implementation of Uzbekistan's agricultural development strategy for 2020-2030.
