Today the Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, who arrived in Uzbekistan on a visit, the press service of the Foreign Ministry said.

The sides discussed the state and prospects of ties between Uzbekistan and the UN and its institutions, in particular with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The sides noted mutual interest in furthering cooperation in various formats. Minister Kamilov emphasized that in Uzbekistan human rights protection is considered as one of the priorities of reforms. A holistic and consistent program of building a democratic state with rule-of-law and strong civil society is enshrined in the adopted Uzbekistan’s Five-Area Development Strategy for 2017-2021.

To date, Uzbekistan has joined more than 70 international documents and ratified 10 major UN human rights conventions, regularly submits reports to relevant institutions on the fulfillment of its obligations in this field.

In the meeting were also present the UNDP Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Stefan Prisner, Regional Representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Central Asia Richard Komenda.
