Launch ceremony was held for the thermal power plant project in Angor district of Surkhandarya province as part of the Tashkent International Investment Forum, which was attended by the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the presidential press service reported.

The $1.2 billion plant will have a capacity of 1.56 GW and will generate 12 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The technologies that will be provided to the TPP will save 1 BCM of natural gas per year. It will be the first thermal power plant in Surkhandarya and the largest built in the country in recent years.

This will help tap the huge economic potential of the province, the President underscored. For example, in the Surkhandarya province there are more than 100 deposits of oil, gas, coal, precious and non-ferrous metals, many types of decorative stones that have not yet been developed. Therefore, over the next five years, it is planned to implement more than 5,000 investment projects worth $7 billion in the province.

The electricity generated by the plant will also provide electricity to 500,000 households in the Surkhandarya province. In addition, it will be possible to export at least 3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year to neighboring Afghanistan.

The project is being implemented as part of a public-private partnership between the German Siemens Energy, the French IDEF and the Dutch Stone City Energy.

The head of state thanked the heads of international financial institutions and companies that took part in the event and confirmed that Uzbekistan fully supports projects with foreign investment.

The project completion is scheduled for the end of 2024.

Currently, 19 power plants with a total capacity of 9,000 megawatts are being implemented in the country. Their total value is more than 10 billion dollars.
