In March 2022, torrential rains over two weeks of unprecedented intensity fell in Uzbekistan, Uzhydromet reported on Thursday.
By this day, in most of Uzbekistan, except for the northern regions, the amount of precipitation has already significantly exceeded the monthly figure. In the mountainous and foothill araes, precipitation was 2–3 times more than usual. Almost two monthly rainfall fell in Tashkent.
Abnormal is the duration of intense rains. In the period from March 5 to 17, rains fell almost daily with short breaks.
The heaviest rains took place on March 11-15. In most places across the country, the amount of precipitation per day on some days reached 25–40 mm, in mountainous areas - in places up to 50–60 mm.
The rain hasn't ended yet. Until March 18 inclusive, intermittent rains, sometimes strong, will pass over most of the territory of Uzbekistan. On March 18, in some places, the transition of rain to snow is not ruled out.
After March 18, a break in precipitation is expected for two to four days.
“In the future, until the end of March, we do not expect such intense and prolonged rains as these days,” Uzhydromet noted.
In March 2003, 2012 and 2021, very rainy weather was also observed, but such intense and prolonged rains as this year have not been observed before.
“Climatologists believe that global warming does not lead to an increase in precipitation. However, it leads to an increase in the extremeness of weather phenomena, including an increase in the frequency of abnormally dry or abnormally wet periods. March of this year is a vivid confirmation of this,” the center said.
