On March 2, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov hosted the UN Under-Secretary-General - Head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov, who arrived in Uzbekistan to attend the high-level international conference "Regional cooperation between the states of Central Asia within the framework of a joint action plan for implementation of the UN global counter-terrorism strategy ”, to be held on March 3-4 in Tashkent, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Reportedly, during the meeting the parties discussed the current state and the ways to further advance cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN. In particular, the main areas of cooperation between the country and the counter-terrorism department of the organization are considered.
Foreign Minister Kamilov highlighted that in recent years Uzbekistan has been actively cooperating with specialized UN agencies on combating terrorism and extremism, and is a party to the fundamental universal legal documents in this area.
At Uzbekistan’s initiative side, four resolutions of the UN General Assembly were adopted. Last year, Uzbekistan became a member of the Human Rights Council for the first time, in which a representative of the country was appointed as vice-chairman for 2022.
“We believe that Uzbekistan’s experience in returning its citizens from war zones as part of the Mehr special operations and ensuring their integration into society can be useful for many UN member countries,” Kamilov said.
The parties also exchanged congratulations on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the accession of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the United Nations (March 2, 1992).
