At a government meeting on the development of carmaking industry on February 14, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev pointed to the need for a phased zeroing of customs duties on car imports.

“Gradually, customs duties should be reduced to zero. There must be competition so that [cars are] cheap and of high quality,” he said.

The President called it unfair that buyers are forced to wait a year, despite the upfront payment.

“It is unfair that our ordinary hardworking people gives away his hard-earned money and the industry turn over for one year,” he said.

Earlier, Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to develop a draft resolution on reducing the rates of customs duties on car imports by 2 times within three days. The President also set the task to completely eliminate the queues for purchase of cars by May 1 and reduce the prepayment for Uzauto Motors cars from 85% to 50%. The MP Rasul Kusherbaev stated that an advance payment of 15% would be enough.
